I began my career as a deputy prosecutor in the Vanderburgh County Prosecutor’s Office. I started my time there prosecuting primarily high-level drug crimes and eventually was moved into prosecuting sex crimes and homicides. Before running for office, Hatfield was a deputy prosecutor in Vanderburgh County for about three years, trying cases before the very court he now hopes to lead. It’s good to have a solid foundation, but ultimately, it’s going to come down to the evidence that’s presented in any given case. It’s imperative for judges to stay abreast of developments and technology, especially when those technologies are being relied upon in criminal and civil cases. It’s not just an issue of whether those types of technologies are reliable in and of themselves, but it’s also an issue of whether or not those technologies can be used to manipulate evidence as well. I have not had any conversations with any other potential bidders, because I think that if we’re going to have that process, the judge shouldn’t come into it with predetermined notions.
